Sources of Surplus
We can split our surplus into two categories - donations collected locally by our team of volunteer drivers, and larger scale donations from food redistribution charities (which we will cover in the next newsletter!)

TRJFP has a team of volunteer drivers that use their own cars to collect surplus food from local supermarkets and businesses. Most of these collections happen early in the morning and the drivers drop off the food to our venues where it is weighed, sorted and displayed (or cooked!). We do have a few evening collections and in this case the food is stored safely at our venues ready to be used the following day.
We regularly collect from local supermarkets including Tesco, Sainsburys, Lidl, Waitrose & M&S. These collections are facilitated by Neighbourly and FareShare whose online platforms connect organisations like TRJFP to the supermarkets. When supermarkets have surplus they offer it through these platforms. We can then then accept or decline the donation depending on how many volunteer drivers we have available each day.
We also have direct relationships with some local businesses including Co-op, Cavan Bakery and Hansel Pretzel who we collect from regularly. During the summer we enjoy receiving fresh fruit and veg from local allotment holders, or keen gardeners! Finally, we can often accept one off donations from other local businesses who find themselves with a surplus.
We couldn’t operate without our fantastic team of volunteer drivers and we are always on the lookout for more! If you are interested in joining our team and would like to learn more about the driving roles please email us on- trjfp.twickenham@gmail.com
We would like to thank our drivers, all the supermarkets and local businesses that provide us with surplus food, and the platforms that connect us together. Without the surplus food there would be no TRJFP!
