Recycling your Food Waste at Home
At TRJFP, we’re all about saving as much food from bins as we can, but some waste is inevitable

I’m yet to find a way to grind avocado stones into a tasty snack for example! The good news is we can still lower the environmental impact of unavoidable waste by using food recycling caddies rather than rubbish bins.
The food recycling system keeps waste out of landfill where it releases greenhouse gas, methane into the environment as it decomposes. Methane is actually 25x more harmful than carbon monoxide so it really is in our interest to reduce it.
Through the food recycling process, by-products of waste breakdown are captured and turned into useful resources including fertiliser and biogas. Biogas is then used to generate energy, helping to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels – ingenious! Food can actually be an incredible source of energy – did you know that recycling six tea bags produces enough energy to boil a kettle for another cuppa? Or that a single banana peel produces enough biogas to fully charge your smartphone twice? And just one lorry load of food waste can produce enough energy to power 20,000 TVs for an hour?
Harnessing the power of the humble food caddy really does make a difference when we all get involved, especially when we think about the global scale of food waste. Experts estimate that if food waste was a country, it would be the third highest emitter of greenhouse gases behind the USA and China. A pretty compelling reason to act.
So, if making banana skin bacon from your leftovers doesn’t float your boat, then remember that you can still do some good by making the right choice of bin for the skin. A choice that even your mobile phone will thank you for! Happy recycling!
